View Full Version : Paint code 988?Impala?corvette?chevelle?
Kiss My SS 05-06-2008, 05:01 PM I am trying to research my paint code (988) but all I could find was "Steel City Grey" and it is for a corvette or a chevelle.
After reading 69427's post about real vs fake... I'm starting to feel that my tag is from another car.
Is there a paint code 988 for a 1964 Impala SS ??? :o
-Joe D.
Eubanks' 64 05-06-2008, 05:38 PM There's no 988 on the paint code chart.
1964 Impala Dude 05-07-2008, 11:07 AM Post a pic of your trim tag so we can better help you.
Kiss My SS 05-08-2008, 12:36 PM As soon as I can borrow a digital camera, I'll down load it. Thanks for the help guys :beers: !
Oh BTW, TAR6569 (a member of this forum) posted a website with paint codes for various years. According to the site, it says 988 = Azure Aqua. How valid is that info, since paint code 988 is not in any paint chart for a 1964 impala?
Here's the site = http://www.348-409.com/
Thanks again !
1964 Impala Dude 05-08-2008, 12:43 PM No problem
bertfam 05-12-2008, 01:17 AM For 1964, Paint code 988 was a 2 tone code. Azure Aqua upper and Ermine White lower.

Thanks Ed,
I was told the same thing too. But, isn't it Azure Aqua lower & Ermine white top ? Did you find that in a paint chart ? Is it a common color combo for Impala's ?
Kiss My SS 05-12-2008, 10:31 AM Here's the body tag... Made in Detroit Michigan... ???
Is this large enough to read ? Sorry I should've cleaned it up !!!
Eubanks' 64 05-12-2008, 11:09 AM Sorry if I gave you bad info. This is chart I was looking at.http://www.paintcodes.net/chevy-paint-codes-1964.html
bertfam 05-12-2008, 01:42 PM Joe, the source I got the info from ("Chevy Cowl Tags, 1950-1975" by Mark Allen) says that the Azure is the upper color and the white is the lower. That sounded strange to me as well, so I double checked it with "Chevy By The Numbers (1960-1964)", and it said the same thing. Must be rare!
Ed
Kiss My SS 05-13-2008, 12:02 AM Thanks Everyone for your help. IT'S GETTING SO DARN COMPLICATED I THINK I'LL JUST PAINT IT BLACK ON BLACK ! LOL...
Does anyone have any pics, of any year Impala, with an Ermine White body with an Azure Aqua top ?
This probably belongs in another thread ?!
Thanks Again !
Eubanks' 64 05-16-2008, 05:29 PM I just today got my free "restoration package" I ordered from Chevrolet. It's a copy of original documents for the '64 originally printed in Oct '63.
It shows just like Ed says. 988 Aqua Azure upper Ermine white lower. Aqua interior trim.
Eubanks' 64 05-16-2008, 05:33 PM Correction to last post... The Impala Super Sport shows WHITE interior trim.
Fossil_Fuel 05-16-2008, 08:46 PM What is a "Restoration Package" and where did you get it?
Eubanks' 64 05-19-2008, 10:49 AM The best description I can give is that it's a 'spec book' originally printed in Oct '63. 'Bout 80 pages front and back. Lots of info. Well worth the price of stamp for sure. They charge $25 in Canada but free here (in the US). I mailed it and got it in a week Fed Ex. Make sure you give them the VIN #, model and year of the car. They'll call you back to verify the VIN and your address. Address and phone number below:

Eubanks' 64 05-22-2008, 10:57 AM Joseph,
Note that the U.S. restoration packet will not give specific information about your particular car but will give you generic information covering your model/year.
Still a very valuable tool especially for the price of a stamp or phone call.
If your car is Canadian built, contact GM Canada Vintage Vehicle services. In Canada, 1-888-467-6853 (8:00 AM-5:00 PM Eastern time) Outside Canada, 1-905-644-3387 or 1-905-644-4060. Unlike U.S. restoration packs, GM of Canada charges a fee for theirs however, Canadian restoration packs come with specific information for each particular vehicle. Vehicles 1963 and older are $25.00. 1964 to current are $45.00. (Canadian dollars)

Just called Chevrolet the other day... Theyre gonna send it to me 3-4 weeks from now. I can wait... Heck it's for free !!! Thanks Craig !!! I'm aware it's a general info about my 64' Impala, but as long as I see solid proof of my original color combo, I'm content !
Eubanks' 64 05-27-2008, 12:17 PM They tell you 3-4 weeks. Got mine in 1- week.

GaDoll 05-31-2008, 02:10 AM You guys rock! I'm going to ask for one of these also. The color of my car is Jewel Blue on all the charts where I can find it. If I remember it correctly it was called something else by GM. I may never paint it, but I want to know what it is if I ever do decide to paint. The 47 yr old paint isn't bad but it has places that aren't so good. Thanks for sharing your information. I'm just getting started with my car and it's learn as you go.
Carol
