Is it a local thing or has the rest of the country gone nuts. In Brandon (a suburb of Tampa) there are at least six owners of mid eighties Impalas running 22" - 24" diameter wheels with enough road clearance to change the oil without a floor-jack. Is this some kind of reaction to the current low-rider craze that has taken over in the past ten years? They remind me of those characterization of 1/28th scale model cars called "Muscle Machines".

They not only have spent thousands on oversized wheels and rubber band tires, they have dropped about $8K apiece in four of the six cars I have seen in deep Candy Apple paint like I've not seen since the late seventies. Is that coming back again?

it seems to be world wide, even down here in OZ we see that kinda thing.
but how else do you make an late 70s to 90s anything stand out from the crowd ( badge engineering ) they all look the same without trick wheels and a paintjob, it's probably also " my first car syndrome" remember when you spent way more money than you should have on your first car ?
big wheels can look great on the right car if you lower it enough though

I saw some cars about a year or so ago...they were from Miami....they had huge wheels and were sitting very high. I think they called them Gators or something. I thought the look was horrible....I hate to hear that it may have caught on. Ah well....to each his own right?
