Is it a local thing or has the rest of the country gone nuts. In Brandon (a suburb of Tampa) there are at least six owners of mid eighties Impalas running 22" - 24" diameter wheels with enough road clearance to change the oil without a floor-jack. Is this some kind of reaction to the current low-rider craze that has taken over in the past ten years? They remind me of those characterization of 1/28th scale model cars called "Muscle Machines".
They not only have spent thousands on oversized wheels and rubber band tires, they have dropped about $8K apiece in four of the six cars I have seen in deep Candy Apple paint like I've not seen since the late seventies. Is that coming back again?
