Hey guys,I have a 61 bubbletop that I'm building as a retro super stocker (although the engine will be a 358 ci. small block with Brodix heads!). I scored an 62' aluminum case Borg/Warner T-10 four speed at a swap meet several years ago and was planning on using it.A guy I work with(and bought a brand new, still in the box, set of old style American torque thrusts from!)said that the early T-10s were only in Corvettes and the T-10s from the rest of Chevrolets line up were cast iron.My question is,If my aluminum cased T-10 was indeed only found in Corvettes do you think it will live behind a very rumpy engine in such a heavy car?If it is a Corvette only piece it must be worth quite a bit more money than I paid for it to a restorer so I guess I'd E-Bay it and buy a Richmond 5 speed for it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Mike,
ALL 1962 Chevrolet T-10s were the T10-1C (aluminum) case. And they were all the same internally, regardless of Passenger or Corvette application. The case might have a VIN stamped on it (on the rear side, begind the side cover) which will tell whether the original use was in Corvette or Passenger.

If you find a VIN on it, please post it.
thanks

Welcome to the board Mike!
As to reliability the Muncie was developed by super sizing that transmission for use by all GM divisions. They lived fine behind a 283 and 327, but the 409 would shed teeth if the rear end ever got traction and didn't break first (most 409 guys swapped out Chevy rear end the bigger stronger Pontiac-Olds rear end with it's" 9.5" ring and pinion and 31 spline axles).

All 1955-58 Pontiac-Olds, Cadillac and Buick car rear ends were 9-3/4 inch ring gear with 31 spline with press on wheel bearing axels. They all used the same case for posi or regular open rear ends so a special (rare) carrier and rear case was not needed.
The 1955-58 Pontiac-Olds rears are kind of scarce now. The NHRA used them in all of their dragsters and hot rods. When they were all used up (broken into little bitty pieces) and hard to find; then the racers switched over to the Ford nine inch rears. This was because the 12 bolt Spicer was gone by 1972 which left only the Ford as an option (the Dana 60 only appeared in Mopar cars, so it used to be considered as a truck rear end under the old NHRA rules). Of course today all pro's use an 11" rear end gear that looks like a FORD nine inch which is why people think the nine inch is a stronger rear than any other, it isn't, just cheaper due to it's popularity.
The Dana 60 is now allowed in all classes so it is the rear end of choice now for high horse gasoline powered cars.
