I know this isn't an Impala question, but why did Pontiac use 8-lug wheels in the sixties? Was there a logical reason, like performance or something, or was it just to be different. I have not found any reasons for it, online.

Just something I was wondering about...

They had a cast aluminum wheel and brake hub assembly, to dissipate the heat from the brakes quickly. Because aluminum isn't as strong per pound as steel they spread the load out over eight lugs.

Those wheels and brakes are much sought after today as they still work as designed, and are different in appearance which is a plus when trying to set your car off at a show.

Take it from a Pontiac guy. These wheels were just an option and all that Big Dave said is correct. Now they are expensive to repair. A liner fits inside the drum which can slip usually chatter and is very expensive to replace and only 2 guys that I know of can do it correctly. $800 to $1000 for a used set decent only is the going price. Correct caps and trim pieces are hard to find and expensive as they vary from year to year. I put rally2 s on my 65 convertible along with disc brakes
