I just sold a set of 17 inch torque thrust off of my 65 Impala. The fronts had a 4 inch backspace and the rear were 4.5 . I replaced them with a set of 18 inch wheels 4 inch front bs and 5inch rear bs. Impalas have big wheel wells so if you go with 7 to 8 inch wide in the front and 8 to 9 in the rear you should be fine.

There are wire and plastic fitment gauges you can buy from Jeg's for about a hundred dollars that will allow you to test fit any wheel and tire combination before you buy. That way you can see if it will rub anywhere on turning the wheel, or as you move the suspension up and down. Most Custom wheel shops will use one before they mount your purchase but they often will charge you a non-refundable mounting fee to tell you your first choice will not work.
