I have tried, unsuccessfully, to adjust the front drum brakes on my 1966 Impala. I've dealt with drum brakes before, but I do not remember them being such a pain in the drain work with! I have pulled off tires, adjusted brakes, put them back on, then repeat, and am still no closer to getting it right than I was when I began.
Is there something I'm missing? There has got to be a simplier way to adjust these so they do not pull left or right. I know, disc brakes would be simplier. But, I want to keep "Daphne" as original as possible. Thanks for your help.

the way to do it is.. jack up the car, adjust the brake with a spoon until the wheel locks up tight, back it off till it turns free. repeat on each wheel. Do this with wheels and tires on.
Now, If your rubber brake hoses are old..they can swell shut on the inside and cause lots of probs.

Thank you, Don. I try it tonight when I get home. This is my driver, so I had to just live with it on my way to work today.

I've got a similar issue with my 66. It pulls to the left under really hard braking. It doesn't pull at all when slowing down or stopping normally, so it really doesn't bother me. I've tried adjusting the fronts so they have the same amount of drag on the wheels a million times and it still does it. I've got all new wheel cylinders, hoses and hardware too. You may have a sticky wheel cylinder or air in one of the lines. Just a thought.

If you buy remanufactured wheel cylinders you have to verify the pistons are the same OD in the wheel cylinders as I have seen mismatched parts in the past.

I completely rebuilt my brake sysyem on the 64. I am old and used to drum brakes but that thing would pull to the left no matter how many times I adjusted them. I even took it to an old mechanic same thing. I wnt two years driving it like this occasionally adjusting but one day the front rubber hose which was new sprang a leak. I replaced it and rebleed and they have been perfect since now going on 8 years. So check or replace your hoses

Good idea, Bob. I'll do that . . . they do not leak, but look a little rough.
