What should be done to the frame in order to be updated? What type of work and parts should be done or put into the differential?
1969 Impala Differential and Framepoboy31 01-02-2009, 08:47 PM What should be done to the frame in order to be updated? What type of work and parts should be done or put into the differential? Big Dave 01-02-2009, 09:33 PM The 1969 had either a Spicer 10 bolt 8.2" 28 spline rear end or the bigger Spicer 12 bolt 30 spline rear end. Both were offered with an Eaton PosiTrac. The Ten bolt suffers from weak axels (usually the first thing to break) but will handle 370 horse power with out complaint just as it left the factory. The 12 bolt was designed to handle 450 horse big block motors and not think a thing of it (it is 1/16th shy of having a nine inch ring gear). The strongest frame existed under convertibles as it had extra cross-members, up front and in the rear of the frame, followed by station wagons which used heavier gauge steel to form the cahennels. Any frame can be boxed in to provide additional strength if needed. Areas that need attention are were the suspension bolts to the frame. A judicious use of gussets goes a long way to making sure a control arm doesn't leave under stress when put to the test. Big Dave poboy31 01-02-2009, 10:30 PM Thanks | |
