I have also looked at the JYD wheels for my '65 and I have done some measuring. You need the 4" backspace to clear a bend in the rear frame in front of the axle as well as lock to lock steering in the front. The 17" is no problem, I don't believe, provided that you use a 245/45 series tire. There is one website that claims that a 255/50 will fit, but I am unwilling to risk it.

Any ideas about 18" wheels?

I don't see where the height of the wheel/tire is a problem. In this case I presume that you would want a 40 series tire. The section width is the problem regardless of the wheel diameter, you need to stay in the 9-9.5" range with the 4" backspace. Less with the 4.5" backspace.
