Generally no, you can remove motor mount bolts and after removing the distributor cap, pick up the front of the motor enough to get the pan to clear the front main caps and get it out. For those not strong enough to pick up a motor: I would suggest a pair of small bottle jacks between frame and heads.

Normally the only resistance to dropping the pan is getting the pan down onto the front cross member with the front engine main caps high enough to clear the front of the pan. Then it is pull back out and down to get it out (with some wiggling to clear the oil pump pick-up and the internal oil pan baffling).

If you do not have a lift, few of us do, then you are in for some serious grubbing with the vehicle safely supported by no less than four two to five ton jack stands (two five tons in the front at the front frame horns, and two two ton jack stands under the rear axle works for me, or go with four five ton stands under the frame at all four corners of the interior frame rails were the frame is on the outside of the interior compartment). You should also leave the transmission mount attached to limit the motor moving fore and aft. It is not worth risking your life or body parts doing this otherwise. Any question about safety and I say pull the motor.

If you are going to work on your own car you should invest in a hoist here is a 2 ton hoist for $159 http://www.cumminstools.com/browse.cfm/4,193.htm.

I did a oil pan swap on mine,I just lifted the engine up,put some 2x4 on the motor mounts to keep the engine up,and the oil pan up off the crossmember.
this was on a small block....are you doing this on a big block?
and what year?

Looks to me like you are going to need to remove the motor completely. Thats alot of pan to wiggle around.
