Greetings~!! First post here!
I just got a 66 impala SS and it is missing the motor. How can I find out what the original motor was??

Welcome to the board Elvin!! On the engine ID pad (SBC V-8 has it on the passenger side just below the head at the front of the motor) there are identifying numbers. Among those numbers are the sequence numbers which must match the last six numbers of your vehicles VIN. You can clean off the pad and read the numbers with a rag and brake cleaner. There are also two or three letter codes on the engine (newer cars had paper tags glued to the engine, older cars had paint stenciled on) that identify the motor horse power and transmission that came with the motor. Pad is in the same place for a BBC, and on the distributor side for a inline six.

that would work, if he had the engine.

I'm not sure about 66 but 64's had different flag emblems on the fenders 1 for 283, 327, and 409 and 6 cylinder. If the emblem is still there take a pic and maybe someone can tell you what motor it had in it.

thanks for all your replies... I looked at the 4 speed that came with it and determined it's a Saginaw so I'm pretty sure is was a 283/327. Anybody got a basic 454 I can stick in it??
tks,
Elvin
