ss option

I've heard that in 1968 ss became an option what exactly does that mean say you could buy a standard impala with ss options just trying to get some clarification thanks

What they mean is that in 68 it RETURNED to being just an option. During 64-67 the Impala SS was designated as a separate model (maybe it was 63-67 I'd have to look for 63). Just like the impala and the belair or the caprice were different models. during these years the Impala SS was given a different model designation and it is identified on the VIN's for those years. After 67 (and prior to 64/63?) the SS was an option that was added onto the Impala base model. It was similar to Air Conditioning or an automatic tranny option being added. On those years you can not tell from the VIN if it is an SS or not, you need further information to determine if it was ordered with the SS option.

In `68, the Super Sport option was RPO Z03. It could be ordered on any Impala, regardless of engine choice. Essentially, what this got with RPO Z03 were Bucket Seats and Console, floor shift (both auto and 4-speed), SS specific door panels, and Super Sport badging on the Dash Board, Door Panels, Grille, Trunk Lid, and front Fenders.

If you have a build sheet, or any other form of original documentation for the car, it should indicate RPO Z03. If it was a Canadian built car, it will show RPO Z03 on the Cowl Tag. US built cars will not show this on the Cowl Tag.
