I am replacing the current dual exhaust set up on my 1966 Impala, the car is a stock 327 with headers, I would like to use Flowmaster Super 40's does anyone have any reviews of the flowmaster mufflers? Additionally where if possible could I find a picture of what a stock dual exhaust system looks like. Any recommendations or advice would be great.
When I had them on my first Impala, I loved them. They were a little loud but not obnoxious. And it was a beautiful tone. That was also with a 400ci, shorty headers, true dual going through flowmaster 40 series and dumping right behind the rear tires. I was thinking of doing the same thing in my current Impala but with some small changes.
FYI: back in the day ( the 60's) we ran Cadillac resonators after the headers on our street rods. I don't know if this helps you at all, I just thought it would be interesting. they were 2" pipe and straight. right now I have Walker mufflers on my 66 Impala because I like the quietness.
Nossa,
That walker exhaust sounds great. How does it sound while driving it? Does it have the blatting sound that so many of them seem to have under throttle? Thanks.
IMO, Flow 40s are some of the worst sounding mufflers out there. Loud, blatty, droning crap. Like yelling into a metal trash can. Try a set of "Turbo" mufflers. You can get decent and cheap ones from Summit.
I'm not sure how to describe my Walker exhaust other than to say "modest". It's nowhere near obnoxious. It's kind of like what I would expect it to sound like - just kind of like a stock car.
I got Magnaflow straight through mufflers and Jones Exhaust resonators. No drone and peaceful on the inside with the windows up. Definitely hear it with the windows down and when you step on it.
I would go here-https://classicmusclecarexhaust.com/. They have sound clips with all of the systems they sell and have some good videos in the 'Exhaust 101' section. They carry Pypes, Flowmaster, and MagnaFlow systems, along with Dynomax mufflers. You can get the Pypes X-Pipe system without mufflers if you want and use Dynomax or even FM 50 or 70 series, which are mild but still have the FM sound. FM 40 series is loud for sure. Pypes Race Pros are fairly quiet but bark under full throttle. https://classicmusclecarexhaust.com/p/pypes-65-70-b-body-x-pipe-2-5-sbg10
