Correct starter nose for 348 or 409

Hi, what is the correct Nose for the starter on a late 348 or early 409 starter? anyone have a photo? Where is the best place for find one? Can I just take a 1966 396 BB starter and put the nose for a 409 on it? Thanks,

Yes. My 409 engines ran 153 tooth flywheel (10Ĺ" clutch) because I had converted over to a 409 from a 327 and didn't want to buy more parts. The 168 tooth starter motor for a BBC is probably the correct part to use because the 348 and 409 are big blocks (Mark I to be exact). The 168 tooth flywheel is for use with an 11" clutch.

You can not mix 153 tooth with 168 tooth parts together as they will not mesh, and it results in broken parts when you try.

This is the starter you need for an automatic transmission

This is for the manual transmissions that bolt to the bell housing and not the engine.

Their are some other variants that exist and you can get more powerful ones. Check out Show Cars for all your 348 and 409 parts. They aren't the cheapest around, but when in doubt about fitment and what you need call them and you will get the parts you need that fit how they should.

The starter that bolts to the bell housing is for a pre-1958 car or a truck. In 1958 (the year the 348 was introduced) Chevy had switched over to motor mounts that bolted to the side of the block (not the four corner mounts used on Tri-Five Chevys and Corvettes). With that change came the new flywheel and starter motor combinations that were used all the way up to 1996 with the introduction of the LS-x series of motors (they have a different distance between the crank flange and the clutch disc).

He should have a 153 side by side mounting hole starter or a 168 tooth diagonal mount starter. They all used the same pinion gear shield differing only in being made of cast iron or aluminum (the gear inside differed in number of teeth on the pinion).

The Chevy Orange starter is a high torque BBC starter for a 168 tooth flywheel.

This is what I picked up at a swap meet. What is it. Numbers seem to say itís for a 1967 BB

I don’t want a generic nose; but the one that came from gm. I think the other end is a low torque end, right?
