Hello everyone, I recently converted my 65 SS with 14 inch stock steel wheels to disc brakes, Has anyone ever had this problem where the wheel does not clear the caliper?
The sales literature states that their disc brakes will require a 15 to 17 inch wheel to clear the caliper (up to a 20 inch wheel if the disc is large enough like those used on the Corvette).
In 1969 when single piston full floating calipers were introduced the Camaro and the Chevelle both offered a special 14 inch steel wheel (not a rally wheel) that would clear the caliper. It is hard on tires because to mount them you have to really stretch the tires as there is no drop down step on these special wheels to mount them. This results in a lot of torn beads that then require a tube to hold air.
In 1967 and 1968 all Chevy cars equipped with optional disc brakes used 15 inch Corvette rally wheels to clear the four piston Corvette disc brakes (Girling fixed bridge calipers). There was never a 14 inch wheel offered with four piston disc brakes. In 1970 all Chevs with disc brakes used a 15 inch steel wheel to clear the caliper and not tear up brand new tires.
You can find those 14 inch steel Camaro wheels that will clear a single piston 11 inch disc brake assembly on flea-Bay. If you have a 12 inch rotor or larger, you need a matching larger diameter wheel. The 12 inch rotors used on third gen Camaros used a 16 inch steel wheel or a 17 inch five spoke mag wheel.
