solenoid to distributor

As per usual I'm mixed up about my wiring in my 62. I've installed an engine harness from AAW
,I asked them how to use the green wire with the r wire, the tech told me to snip off the cloth covered wire & hook up to my HEI dist. After doing this I went to the key cranked her up it started then quit as soon as I let go of the switch.
I should mention I just installed a mini starter.I asked for a starter with the R post, so my starter has the 2 lugs.
I hooked up my purple wire to the lug closest to the block S lug so I hooked my green wire to the other post.
I am using a 12 gauge wire from the fuse box through the firewall to the HEI & it works fine.
The problem is I would like to power up from the starter. AAW has a video on u tube offering a wire with a diode for sale that should allow me to do this.
How would I go about adding my own diode? I also have a 12 gauge wire from the starter up to the dist. Another thought is the extra post another S post?
I read the other posts on this subject but didn't seem to deal with my situation. The starter I got says made in China hmmmm. I had heat soak in my og starter too close to my 2 1/2 ex pipe.
Any input is greatly appreciated & I thank you in advance Ken new in 62. PS how many amps in my dist wire (diode)

You now have to wire your ignition hot to the coli so that it runs after you crank it up. Right now you are powering the ignition only off of the starter solenoid that will disconect when you let go of the sdtart position.
