Whining isn't whether the gears are stock or not but in the rear end set up. Drag racing gears are not suitable for the street because they are too soft, (wear out in short order) so that the gear tooth bends when you drop the hammer rather than breaks off. Great for drag racing but noisy on the street.
Even a properly set up gear will make noise if it was not broken in properly. The gear teeth slide over each other (under a tremendous load) and have to lapped into each other to get a perfect fit. That is why they have to be broken in properly.
