`66 console gauge problem

My recently acquired `66 appears to have come originally equipped with a console but apparently someone later added the gauge cluster. Itís an a/c car and where the cluster should meet up with the dash it doesnít fit very well largely because thereís a couple of ashtrays and some stainless trim in the way. I like the look of the cluster and would like to keep it but Iím unsure of the best way to go about making it look right. Any ideas?

attach a couple of photos, factory air ? or dealer installed under dash ? I've seen air cars with gages so I know they fit, maybe an incorrect gage housing, different console for gages ? or you may just have to lower the front of the console by modifying the brackets so it looks right.

I'm beginning to think that this is the wrong console for this car entirely. The rear mount doesn't line up with the tab on the transmission tunnel either.

2 ashtrays ? mmmmm maybe ?
this is the correct console ( eBay item #290011377698 )
this is the correct gage cluster ( # 250010704475 )
there's also a red convertible on ebay with console and gages ( # 280012123541 )
hope that helps

I thought that having 2 in dash ashtrays was a bit odd as well. Was that an option or do I have more of a mess than I envisioned? I looked at the red car on eBay and it too seems to have the gauges added afterwards, the housing doesn't fit flush to the dash and it also covers up an ashtray. Certainly they didn't come that way from the factory?

Smile Console interferes with ash tray

Maybe GM was just trying to get people to stop smoking in their car. Either that or they were encouraging smokers to turn off the A/C, and flick their ashes out the window in an attempt to keep the smell of cigarettes out of the car.

I've seen 65s & 66s with a second ashtray on the far right side, but not right next to the heater & air cond. controls, but who knows ? it may have been an option or a factory @#$% up, but you're going to have to start at the dash, get that right and work your way down. check out as many 66s you can for sale on line and at shows and work out what's wrong, coz something is.

I'm beginning to think that in 1966 SS was the Several Smokers option. That's five ashtrays!

Although I like the look of the console mounted gauges I confess that I don't often find myself wondering what the manifold vaccuum is at any given time. I've got a couple of months to figure it out while the car is being media blasted and the metal work is being done. If you fine folks will keep your eyes open for a possible solution as well I'd be very appreciative. jeff

I have the same set-up on my 66 SS. My father was the original owner and told me that he had the guage cluster added at the dealership. The factory supplied "guaged" dash came with a pad that ran the length of the brushed aluminum inserts. This took up the space that causes the gap. Every so often you see them on e-bay, the last one i saw was item # 4648759641. Mine only has one ashtray but maybe two ashtrays came as an option with A/C models, mine is not.

Thanks, I looked at the pads and that explains alot. I'm wondering, do they conceal the dash ashtrays entirely?

yes, it will cover up the ashtray or ashtrays in your case, as well as all that nice lower dash chrome/brushed aluminum. i'm debating myself with my restoration whether i perfer the ugly padding or the guage gap. i have some pics, i'll post them if i can figure out how

Thanks for sending the pics, answered my questions exactly. I also like the dash trim and hate to loose it to padded vinyl. Decisions decisions

Non A/C cars had 1 dash ashtray, A/C cars had 2 dash ashtrays and cars with the gauge package only had the console ashtray. All had 2 in the rear armrest.

Gauge package:

Also keep in mind that there are two separate padding sets, one for A/C cars and one for non- A/C cars.

Gauge and lower padding

RPO D59 & A51:

As stated, you need the lower dash pads or the installaton, so many people are unaware and end up cutting off part of the gauges to make them fit.
You can see some good pics of the lower dash in my video:

Paul

There's 3 sets of lower dash pads on ebay except they are all for non-AC cars, they are also all missing the metal inserts that you need to correctly mount and install the headlight, wiper, ignition switch and lighter.

Paul

One more thing, your profile says L72, if you are building an L72 66 car, you would need the clock that replaces the manifold gauge and then the universal clock mounted on top of the dash, at least if you wanted to do this correctly for an L72.
