63 SS rear cove question

I have been loooking at a lot of 63 SS Impalas and I have noticed some have the engine turned rear cove on them and some don't, was this a option or did all Super Sports have it or was it never supposed to be there at all?

The SS cars had the swirls, regular Impala did not. The same swirls are in the side trim and at each side of the speedometer on the SS.
