I have a leaky heater core on mt 64SS Impala without A/C. My question is how do the dash mat retaining plugs come out on the inside. There seems to be a hole down the center of them but no screw that I can find. Do you just pull them out? I don't want to wreck the dash mat because it's in perfect condition. I looked in the factory shop manual but it just says remove the plugs but not how to. Thanks for any help.

On my 68 its just speed nuts that hold the dash on, but you gotta get way up in there to get them off. Dash cluster, whatever radio you have, and glovebox liner all have to come out first.

Some where barbed plastic that went in without any thought about removal. They have to be cut off under the washer head with ***** and pushed through. Then on reassembly you use a new hold down.

These look different than any I've ever seen before. Almost look like rubber bumpers. There are two on the inside of the car just below the heater box holding the mat to the toeboard area. I will get a photo tomorrow in the morning. If it matters this was a Canadian built car. Thanks again for the help.

These look different than any I've ever seen before. Almost look like rubber bumpers. There are two on the inside of the car just below the heater box holding the mat to the toeboard area. This is what the fasteners look like. I did see the other end on the engine side of the firewall and they do look like those plastic barbed fasteners. Now to get the fender well out so I can see all the nuts. Thanks for the help.

The only way to remove the original rubber plugs is to warm them with a heat gun. I do this with many old rubber plugs, etc. Be very careful you do not overheat and start a dash fire. It doesn't take too much warmth to wake them up. You need two people to carefully push, pull and prod them out. I have done this because the aftermarket ones are a hard plastic and will only cause grief trying to install them. Have fun :)

One more thing: the hole in the plug is for an installation tool. Did you ever see one of those rubber oil pan drain plugs? You push something inside and it stretches the plug. I made one from an old, damaged Phillips screwdriver by grinding the end round, like a pushrod end. That way you won't poke a hole when re-installing the plug. Still, remember they are old and need respect.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try the heat to soften them up a little. I was wondering if that hole in the center was for putting them in.

My 64 has factory AC but removing the mat was not needed in my case.

However, the strap that holds the heater core in place has screws that have to be accessed from the engine side. That means removing the fan and it's housing from the engine side. Or a lot of pounding, wiggling and wrestling (risking damage to your new core).
