Hi, we'd like to convert our '64 Impala to power steering, but the car has still it's original 230 6-cylinder engine and not a V8. The original system was removed in the eighties because of a leaking problem. I contacted Classic Industries and they advise to back to the original power assist steering set up but don't sell a complete kit. I'm not that technically skilled, so can anyone check what remaining parts I need?

Classic Industries can sell me the following parts:

  • power steering slave cylinder
  • power steering control valve
  • slave cylinder bracket
  • steering coupler
  • power steering hose kit
  • power steering hose retainer
  • power steering hose bracket set
  • power steering pump (remanufactured 6 cylinder)
  • power steering stud and bolt kit

They don't offer any power steering pump bracket or power steering pulleys for a 6 cylinder. Are these parts hard to find? Is anything missing?
Thanks!!

I'm wondering why you would need a "Steering Coupler".

Also, it's debatable how important it is, but the Steering Box on a Power Steering set up has a slightly different Ratio.

Bill, it sounds like the car originally had power steering, but was removed. It also sounds like the original steering box is still present.

Yes, the car came with power steering in '64 but was once removed. So I guess the original steering box is still in the car. Is there any way to check this?
Count the steering wheel turns from lock to lock and let us know what the exact number is right down to the fraction.

Thanks for the tip! I contacted Steve and he's going to look for 6-cylinder parts. Fingers crossed!
I've been hesitant to say, but I have exactly what you need. I have a '63 230-6 with the complete Powering Steering set up. The problem is shipping. I see that you are located outside of the US and shipping and all has been so problematic that I finally gave it up. Although there are certain exceptions. Send me a PM if you would like.

Okay, I'll keep this in mind, thanks! If Steve can't help me out, I'll contact you. Yes, I live in Europe and shipping and customs have changed a lot, but we're determined to get the restoration done.
