Not a lot of visual progress but I did get the right side cove patch fitted.

I cut it off a Dynacorn panel that is no longer available. I've had this for about 10 years and wish I had bought a dozen sets then.

Trim fits nicely. Once I have the wayward inner structure panel welded in place, I will attach the skin with drill screws and check the glass fit before proceeding.

Looooking gooood! I know what you mean about getting parts that are obsolete, when they were originally available. As the wife always says, woulda, shoulda, coulda. But one just don't know what the future may bring. Who know these old classics would still be around.

Today, the Chevelle went from a driver to, uh, non-driver status...

We removed the tires and lowered it to make it easier to lift the clip off by hand.

We removed some of the parts I'm keeping and disconnected everything to pull the engine/trans. I sold the engine a couple weeks ago.

Less than 5 hours to end up with a pile of parts...:D

Work will continue on the rear window next time.

What with the holiday and work, I finally got back on the car yesterday. My goal was to attach the inner brace I cut off in the proper position. To do that I had to lower the deck panel on the right, as it was also out of place. I have a flat strap on the window channel and it should lay flat.

I broke the spot weld loose and pushed it down.

Fashioned a strap to tie it all together and provide an anchor point for the brace.

Once the strap was welded in, I welded the brace in place.

Gonna take some work to fab panels to span the void.

Set the glass in place to check fit, as that is the most important aspect of all this fitting.

It is sitting on the drill screw heads, but the gap is very uniform and should seal up nicely with the butyl tape.

Looks much better Mitch. :hurray: It's a shame it couldn't have been done correctly at the factory.
Yeah, it would've saved some time and frustration but I HAD to fix it.

My wife got me a T-shirt for Christmas that says;

I have CDO,
it's like OCD but with the letters
in the correct alphabetical order,
As they should be !

Prepped the body and panel for install.

Got that done and moved on to the cove skin. I added the backer for strength and alignment of the butt weld.

Then it was time to remove the body.

I needed the chassis for a local club tech event today. The frame will be stripped bare for powder coating...

Well, I've certainly ventured a bit from the back window area...
Today John and I stripped the control arms of bushings and ball joints and then I opened another can of worms...

I added a plate inside the frame and an angle iron on the bottom edge 3 years ago, laying on the floor.
Today my CDO got the best of me and I decided to eliminate the angle iron on the edge...:(

I cut as much of the rusted original frame out as I could get at. I will leave the gusset plate I put in and will build the frame back with new material.

I got all the rust repaired on both sides of the frame and 5 washers welded on rusted out mounting holes. It's ready to go to powder coating...:hurray:

Mitch I was reading through some 1966 Chevrolet's Service Bulletins the other night and I came across a reference to there being THREE Zinc Anodes secured in the rear window area with a brass studs spot welded to the sheet metal. The Zinc protected the sheet metal from rusting, but was consumed with age due to electrolysis.

Are you aware of this. Apparently not all of the assembly plants attached these sacrificial anodes and there was surface rust showing up that discolored paint and trim under the warranty period. These anodes where prescribed as a fix if not present when the window trim was removed.

Nope, I've never heard of them or seen them. That is interesting, were they a dealer installed "fix" after they repaired rust under warranty ?

My car was assembled at the Atlanta plant, so it may not have been deemed necessary, although in retrospect, it certainly did...:(

Sorry it took so long to find it again had to go back and read a lot of pages to find it. Surprisingly it was on the second to last page, and not the usual last page.

It was in the July 1967 Service News on page 7. There were four not three Zinc "Plates", and the replacement part number was 7741144 with replacement trim mounting studs part number 4492963.

No diagrams or illustrations in the article that was it.

Wow, Those are purdy!
Thanks,
It'll be a couple weeks before I get the rolling chassis assembled again. I'll post a few pics of it. It's going to look really nice together..:hurray:
