Hi All. I just purchased a 1967 Impala 2-door coupe, Bolero Red with red interior and A/C, and I have a question regarding my VIN and my trim tag. My VIN is 163877L115904. This indicates a 2-door Impala coupe with an L6 engine.

My Trim Tag is as follows:
11B H058
ST 67-16487 LOS 5376 BODY
TR 871-A R-R
W 2EM
5Y

So I decipher this to read that my car was built in the 2nd week of November, 1966, it's a '67 model year, built in Los Angeles, with Bolero Red exterior and top, and Red interior with Bench Seat, and Accessory Group 1 W= tinted windshield, Accessory Group 2 E= Air Conditioning, M=Powerglide transmission, and Accessory Group 5 Y= custom front and rear seat belts with front retractors.

However, my trim tag reads 67-16487, which indicates a V-8 instead, which had me nervous at first, until I read on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and Cowl Tag Decoding ? Impalas.org page the following:

"Here is a chart showing all the body style numbers for each of the years. The majority of the assembly plants showed an 8 cyl. body style on the cowl tag, regardless of the engine size. However, some plants showed a 6 cyl. designation if the car was to have such an engine. When trying to figure out if your car had an L6 or V8, always go by the VIN number."

"The body style on the cowl tag is typically in a V8 format, even if the car came with an L6 engine. Some plants however, did stamp a L6 body style on the cowl tag if it was to be assembled with that engine. In most cases, the assembly plant code is followed by either the sequential body number or the order confirmation number found on factory paperwork like the window sticker."

Ok, so that being said, I can accept that my trim tag identifies my car as a V-8 car, but my VIN says it was an L6 car which is what I believe it to be (it currently has a clapped out SBC mystery motor in it). However, are there any other numbers from the VIN that should also appear on my trim tag?

Many thanks, and I look forward to getting to know you guys.

Starting in 1967 the original engine, and trans should have the last six digits of your VIN stamped on the ID pad (for the motor, or into the pan rail on the tranny if an automatic). As you have already read the VIN tag trumps anything stamped on the trim tag. The hidden VIN is stamped into the frame on the top (hence "hidden") behind the passenger side rear tire but before were the bumper bolts to the frame. You can read it with a mirror after brushing off all of the dirt.

Thank you Dave. The straight six was in a pickup that the seller had, but I wasn't planning on reverting the car to an L6 anyways, however I did not look at the ID pad on the motor in the truck to see if it was the original. So, there are no other digits from the VIN that would appear on the trim tag?

The trim tag was installed on the body at the end of the Fisher Body assembly line. This is before it ever arrived at the Chevy assembly line. The Chevy assembly line puts the motor and trans in the frame along with the rear end and the car's suspension. Then the body is married to the frame so the rest of the car can be assembled (interior door glass, and windshield, radiator, etc.) At the end of the Chevy assembly line the trim tag is installed so that it matches the car.

Ok, perhaps I'm not asking the question correctly. Aside from the "16387" portion of my VIN, does any other part of that VIN sequence also appear on my trim tag?

No. The trim tag just contains a thumbnail of how the body was built as to paint and interior colors (bench or bucket seats, tinted glass and all of the options that could possibly added to the trim tag but rarely are). There are five pages (groups) of options but only a select few ever make it onto the trim tag and I have no idea why some are chosen but not others.

Door 1643709 driver pillar 168376c130616 now my engine has C6Z114487 is there any other engine stamps or casting that can tell me my info please and thank you
Check the Engine Suffix Code again. The "6" in between the CZ does not sound right.

Also, let us know what year Impala you have.

I'm better at searching the internet than being really knowledgeable about the in's-and-out's of engine block stamps. I'm thinking a couple possible things.

1) this is a replacement warranty Goodwrench engine
2) this is a rebuilt motor from some shop and that's their serial # for the engine

I've tried variations of the number and nothing is coming up. Mortec.com has nothing even close to it in serial #'s that I can find.
until we can get one of our more knowledgeable members to take a look I'm kinda stumped
