Not sure if I got this correct or not but am I missing anything here?
VIN 164878T157328
Cowl tag
11E= 3rd week in November
68-16487=1968 2 door hard top V8
TAR168957= Terrytown's sequence number 168957 (does this have to have relevance to the vin number?)
805- = black bench cloth? (what does the - mean?)
V-V = upper and lower color some shade of green that I dont remember the name
Thats it as far as codes on the cowl tag.

Trying to figure out if this a SS427 or a poser, engine long gone and no documents found. I know these codes wont tell you if it is or is not but does anyone here see something that I may be missing? Car is a 4 speed with 12 bolt with most key components like the hood, fender gills, and 6k redline tach.

Thanks for any input

Welcome! Pictures will help.
The Tarrytown body sequence number does not have relevance to the VIN.
805 = does mean Black Cloth Bench Seat interior. "-" does not mean anything.
V-V --> "V" - Lower Body color --> Sequoia Green, "V" - Upper Body color --> Sequoia Green
Does the car look original? If it has the hood, gills, 12-bolt, 4-speed, etc --> Good chance it is an SS427.

Thanks for the reply

Yes car has all the key components you mentioned other than wrong engine and wrong color, hard telling on history of this one but appears to have been hot rodded some in the past and still that way. Question does the floor shift bench seat cars always get the hump and ring for the boot from factory or just a cutout with boot? this one by the pics I do have is just a hurst boot but hard to tell if there was a hump or not at this point. Plan is to travel * hours later this week and look under the floor on a lift to see what that area looks like.

I will also get a few pictures of the cowl tag at same time, Anything else to look for under car why its up for like larger sway bar etc for the heady duty suspension?

Thanks for the welcome and info

Bing clue would be look for the rear axle code, stamped into the front passenger's side of the axle tube. I have a sample picture at impalas.org/drivetrain

I remember this car and thought it would be interesting to see it in person to look for more clues. Interior looked original so may have been a plain Impala big block 4spd, not SS427. They could have added the SS427 items. Interesting it has the L72 tach.

Your right and that's why Im asking here, stuff could have been added for sure over the years to a plain impala.
Clues on axle code for a 4 speed SS427 differ from a regular impala big block 4 speed? I have looked at plenty of axle codes over the years so I know right where to look.

Where have you seen this car before?

Thanks for the input

TAR6569 Thanks for the response and good to know

Do you happen to recall any other info from the ebay listing like how long ago, location, price or any other details you may be able to share with me?

I also plan to check to see if it still may have to born with trans by chance, so are you saying the L72 and or the M21 was only available with those gear sets?

Sorry to ask so much here and I am trying to just gain a bit of education before I make the drive, one of these cars have been on my bucket list for some time now and Im not a total purist but like the day 2 styling with something like this would fit me somewhat like Id want it to be so this one got my attention

Yeah the car was on ebay. Axle code isn't different for big block but if it had a code for 4:10 or 4:56, could be a clue of it being a L72 and/or M21
Well I went and bought the car, axle code is DH 1108B so a 3.31 12 bolt posi built in November at Buffalo which so at least correlate with the cowl tag build date somewhat but I am not sure if the L72 would have been available with a 3.31 but I believe not. The engine is a 67 396 and the trans is a 67 as well but not sure yet on what one. I will be digging for clues here for a wile as time pemits

Well yes I did and that color is a love hate color like alot of colors are but thank you for bringing this up for the 2nd time, pretty obvious what side you are on here. Yes I will change it back if I keep it long enough but first is the fun to find out if this thing is real or fake but anyways it is a bigblock 4 speed sport coupe impala and at that I did not get hurt on price.

I don't see anything wrong with a car painted in Harley's racing color at all, in fact I think it's cool to be different to everyone else's, especially at a car show it makes yours easy to find. Drive it & enjoy it I say, and the less you worry about what other people think the better & that's not just cars, it's in life.

Yeah, but how do you know it is "that" shade? My car's color varies to the naked eye depending on the light of the day & even the time of day, only the OP truly knows. Many factors determine which shade of orange, or which shade of any other color is displayed. Including the camera used, the amount of light on the day (& overcast, as it was, will automatically make it look darker), the file type the image was saved as, your monitor (I've got two different brands of monitor attached to my dual monitor PC & they display color very differently to each other), your graphics card and even your own brains ability to interpret color (color blind people don't necessarily see the exact same colors as everyone else).

Not looking for an argument buddy, just sayin.
