Hello ya'll. I've recently purchased my 65' and currently doing some replacing and such. My car was all original with 44k miles when I bought it. The car came with an AM radio, which means only 1 speaker in the dash. My dilemma is this. I want to put a new radio in the car, but leave the AM in the dash. I bought a blue tooth knob to install which connects to my phone so I can run Pandora or internet radio via my phone. I want to install a more complete speaker system. I was planning to put two 6x9's on the rear deck, but thought about installing a rear seat with the speaker installed. I know its not an original type speaker setup for 65' sedan, but I think it would look nice. My questions are:

1. If anyone has ever done this what problems, if any, did you have.
2. Is it even possible that seat with the speaker installed would fit?

Any suggestions on accomplishing this would be great.

As far as the speakers go, RPO U79 Stereo Multiplex was available in the 1965 full size car. It included an AM/FM push button radio with 4 speakers. 2 Kick panel speakers with grills along with 2 6x9 rear deck speakers. You can go this route for a much better sound and hook your system into these speakers.

Welcome Chris. I put my new radio in the glove box. 2 Speakers in the kick panels, 2 in the rear shelf.

I don't know if a convertible/hard top rear back seat with a speaker in it would fit in your sedan.

You could pretty easily modify your seat to accept a rear seat speaker. You would neeed the speaker mount and cut the framework around it. Upholstery might be a bit harder.

Some ideas for you:

You can have the old radio retrofitted internally for stereo AM/FM/Aux. Or buy another non working radio and have it retrofitted, saving your original.

Secretaudio makes a system that you mount remotely (under the seat in the trunk, etc) and operate by remote control. They also have speakers that you can put under the front seat. I have not heard how speakers like that sound, but I think they could be made to sound good with proper EQ.

6x9's can be put in the rear deck and fairly well hidden with some effort. I took the stock carboard parcel shelf and cut out a pattern of holes to provide some support but still let the sound through, covered the whole thing with speaker grill cloth and painted it with interior dye to match.
